Introduction
A phlebotomist is a healthcare professional who is trained in the collection and handling of blood specimens for laboratory testing. They are responsible for performing venipunctures (drawing blood from veins) or skin punctures (pricking the skin to collect a small amount of blood) on patients, labeling and tracking blood samples, and preparing them for transport to the laboratory.
Phlebotomists must follow strict safety protocols and maintain a sterile environment to minimize the risk of infection and ensure accurate test results. They also interact with patients, explaining the procedure, calming their fears, and providing instructions for post-procedure care.
Objectives
After this course student will be able to:
- Collect blood specimens safely and accurately from patients, following proper procedures and protocols.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including equipment, supplies, and records.
- Ensure patient comfort and confidentiality during the blood collection process, and provide clear instructions for post-collection care.
- Verify patient identification, test orders, and specimen labeling, to prevent errors and ensure quality control.
- Manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload, while communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and clients.
- Keep up-to-date with the latest phlebotomy techniques, equipment, and regulations, and participate in continuing education and quality improvement initiatives.
- Meet or exceed performance standards and goals, such as productivity, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
