Introduction
A General Duty Assistant (GDA) is a healthcare professional who provides basic care to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings. Their primary duty is to assist nurses and other healthcare staff with patient care activities such as feeding, bathing, grooming, and mobility.
GDAs are also responsible for monitoring patients' vital signs, reporting any changes to the nursing staff, and helping patients with basic exercises prescribed by the physical therapist. They may also assist in the administration of medications and the cleaning and maintenance of patient care equipment.
Objectives
After this course student will be able to:
- To assist medical staff in providing patient care, including administering medications, changing dressings, and helping with personal hygiene.
- To monitor patient vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate, and report any changes to medical staff.
- To maintain a clean and safe patient environment, including disinfecting equipment, keeping patient rooms tidy, and ensuring that medical supplies are well-stocked.
- To provide emotional support to patients and their families, including answering questions and providing comfort during difficult times.
- To document patient information accurately and timely in electronic medical records (EMR) or other systems.
- To communicate effectively with patients, their families, and medical staff to promote effective care coordination and ensure patient safety.
Certification
The GDA certificate program typically includes training in areas such as patient care, infection control, basic medical terminology, basic nursing skills, and communication skills.
